After selecting the ideal bike shed that will perfectly accommodate all of your bikes and provide you with the additional storage you require, the next question you should ask yourself is how big should the base of your bike shed be? This article will act as a guide for determining how big your bike Shed Base should be, and recommendations for the right size bike shed base to use for each bike shed size.
How To Choose The Size Of a Bike Shed's base
When you are deciding where to place your bike shed in your garden, you should choose a level, stable, and solid surface which won’t subside or become boggy in wet weather. This will protect your bikes from the elements and ensure your shed is firmly in place. It will also help make the installation process go more smoothly. A solid level base is required to ensure your shed works as intended, and prevent misalignment over time. Our sheds can happily live on four types of base: a level concrete slab, an area already paved, an eco-base or a decked base.
Concrete slab:
this is the best base for any of our bike sheds, especially our vertical units. The slab should be the same dimensions (W x D) as the shed footprint. It ought to be level and 100 mm thick.
Existing Paved Area: fine for any of our units. We typically install Classic Sheds in front gardens on paving that is already in place and has a slight slope for drainage, so there are rarely any issues. To cover the shed's entire footprint, additional paving or concrete should be added if the paving is incomplete (for example, alongside a portion of soil).
Eco-base is a honeycomb-like grid layer made to be filled with shingle. Eco-bases can be used to put in Classic and Slot-in Sheds. We recommend that the eco-base be laid on sharp sand over a well compacted and level sub-base 100mm thick. Before adding shingle, the eco-base should be leveled and firmed, and it should finish about 25 millimeters above the ground.
Decked base.
For sloped sites, a decked
Shed Bases is an excellent option. The frame should be set level and the joists running side to side. Better structural support is the result because the joists in our sheds run from front to back. Please get in touch with us if you need any help. We do not recommend the following as a base: gravel, soil, grass, ‘astro’, old or uneven decking/paving, or any mix of these. If your site is currently any of these we recommend it be replaced with a solid base from the options above.
All our sheds include a sturdy timber floor, which sits on rubber pads. These pads can be adjusted (between 1-3cm) so that the floor panel is firm before installing the walls.
When you are selecting a bike shed, making sure you have ample space for the base is also important, so you should always make sure you have a bit more space than you may think you need.
Should My Bike Shed Base Be Bigger Than The Shed?
On all sides, your base should be no bigger than the shed's footprint. If you are putting your shed on a base made of concrete, the concrete needs to be about 100 millimeters thick.
